Parents and young people reported that discomfort in discussing sexual topics, and parents’ lack of sexual knowledge and related communication skills influenced their decisions about whether, and how, to talk about sexuality.
What is sexuality?
Sexuality includes things like our sexual orientation, sexual health, the way we act in relationships; how we feel about our bodies; how we interact with both males and females; and our understanding of who we are sexually.
What is sex education?
Sex education is conceptualized holistically with the goal of empowering youths to better understand their sexuality and relationships, which will ultimately improve adolescents’ sexual health and overall quality of life.
Equitable: All young people, not just certain groups, are able to obtain the health services they need.
Accessible: Young people are able to obtain the services that are provided.
Acceptable: Health services are provided in ways that meet the expectations of youth clients.
Appropriate: The health services that young people need are provided.
Effective: The right health services are provided in the right way and make a positive contribution to the health of adolescents.
